Hay Tor

Dramatic sunrise at Hay Tor, DartmoorSunrise at Hay Tor, Dartmoor, on a rainy autumn morning

Anyone who’s been to Dartmoor must have seen, if not visited, Hay Tor. On the approach from Bovey Tracey you drive straight past it but it is surprising just how far into the moor it can be seen.

Some say that it is just a big ugly rock and I can sympathise with that but, in the early hours when the crowds have yet to gather, I kinda like it. In fact, I’m warming to it all round – on a summers day when it is teeming with people, there are few better places to find a spot on the grass, enjoy the view, and have a picnic.

From a certain angle, although not the one in this photo, it looks a little like the mountain Suilven in the Northern Highlands.

This photo was taken on a March morning as the sun rose.
