Shilstone Tor in Northern Dartmoor is one of the easiest tors to get to – once you’ve found it by car that is. It is about 100 yards from a small carpark on the road between South Zeal and Gidleigh. The difficult bit is finding your way there by car.
It offers easy access to Throwleigh Common and a starting point for a longer walk – to Cosdon Beacon perhaps, or Buttern Hill stone circle. I visited on a hot summer day when the ground was dry. There is lots of marshy ground in this area – as evidenced by the prolific cotton grass on show. Therefore, in wetter weather, you probably need to take care to avoid straying into really boggy ground.
The views south towards Kestor rock and even further to Hay Tor are spectacular.
